TO THE BISHOPS OF THE UNITED STATES CONFERENCEĭuring my meeting on 13 September last with the officers of your Conference of Bishops, I suggested that together you make a retreat, a time of seclusion, prayer and discernment, as a necessary step toward responding in the spirit of the Gospel to the crisis of credibility that you are experiencing as a Church. ![]() ![]() ![]() (He charged me and my two sisters a shilling each to witness this particular event, yet we never learned much.) "Oh, I wouldn't worry about that," I says in my breezy way, as I am as delightfully breezy with friendships as I am with life, "when I was her age we were all reading The Happy Hooker and it didn't do us any harm."
